Features, Latest Edition

The Meridian Weekly – May 3, 2026

Spring is in full swing, and this week’s edition is bursting with community pride! We’re thrilled to feature 8-year-old Natalie Grecu, a second-grader and fourth-generation Ovid-Elsie student, whose adorable pink-hued design was chosen for this year’s Elsie Dairy Festival T-shirt. Congratulations, Natalie! Meanwhile, the Ovid Lions Club wrapped up another successful highway cleanup (34 bags of trash!) and White Cane Week fundraiser, while the Greater Laingsburg Recyclers report an 11% increase in recycled materials — proof that our community’s commitment to sustainability is growing strong.

We also say a heartfelt goodbye to several beloved residents, including Mary Louise Howard, a 33-year social studies teacher at Ovid-Elsie Middle School who walked with cheetahs in South Africa and visited all seven continents. On the sports front, we’ve got full team photos and season previews for Ovid-Elsie baseball, softball, golf, tennis, and track — plus action from Laingsburg baseball’s strong start and the Marauders’ continued MMAC dominance. And don’t miss Crystal Mitchell’s charming column on planting potatoes, hunting for old-fashioned clothespins, and the trauma of a $44 fill-up. As always, thank you for supporting your hometown paper — we’ll see you next week!
