This week’s edition of The Meridian Weekly brings you a packed issue as we approach the final days of July and look ahead to a busy August in our communities. We’re pleased to welcome Ryan Portenga as the new superintendent of Ashley Schools, who shares his vision for fostering connection and transparency in education. The Ovid-Elsie Board of Education voted unanimously to honor longtime educator and coach Doug Long by naming the OE track the Doug Long Track Complex, funded entirely through private donations. Meanwhile, Ovid-Elsie Area Schools is actively enrolling for the Schools of Choice program, and the district is exploring long-term facilities planning with an initial bonding capacity of approximately $31.8 million to address aging infrastructure.
Mark your calendars for several upcoming community events: the Elsie Community Block Party for National Night Out on August 4th, the Clinton County 4-H Fair running August 2nd-6th, and the Shiawassee County Fair from August 9th-15th. Music lovers won’t want to miss Wilson Thicket’s free concert at the St. Johns City Park performance shell on July 29th, and the Ovid Library will host authors Pat Commins and Elizabeth Rice for a presentation on their new book “No Shy Colleen” on August 11th. We also feature candidate profiles for several local and congressional races ahead of the August primary election. As always, we encourage you to support our local businesses, attend these community gatherings, and stay connected with your neighbors. We’ll see you around town!
