This week’s edition of The Meridian Weekly is filled with stories of remembrance, community service, and forward-looking plans. We are proud to share the dedication of a bench in downtown Laingsburg honoring the memory of Duane “Slug” Ginther, a beloved Lions Club member who gave 61 years of service to our community. Four generations of his family gathered at the Dairy Dan to celebrate his legacy, a fitting tribute to a man whose motto was simply “We Serve.”
In Ovid-Elsie, Superintendent Mark Horak provides an honest and transparent update on the district’s financial outlook, projecting a budget deficit of approximately $500,000 for the upcoming year due to declining enrollment and state funding uncertainties. While challenging, the district is actively reviewing operations to identify efficiencies while maintaining its commitment to students. We also have full coverage of the 2026 Elsie Dairy Festival, now in the books with wonderful memories from the “Vows with the Cow” wedding, kids activities, and community gatherings. Looking ahead, Ovid Carriage Days is just around the corner with pre-sale ride tickets now available, and we have details on the St. Johns Concert in the Park series continuing with the Meridian Community Band’s patriotic tribute for our nation’s 250th birthday. Thank you for making The Meridian Weekly part of your summer.
