This week’s edition of The Meridian Weekly is filled with important community developments, from fire department facility planning to school board decisions and the return of fall festivities. We lead with news that leadership from the Elsie Area Fire Department met with State Representative Tim Kelly to review the status of their new facility project, which was the only Clinton County project to receive state grant funding. Meanwhile, the Ovid-Elsie Board of Education accepted an independent investigation’s findings that no policy violations occurred regarding allegations raised by District Nurse Melissa Jones, though the board voted 4-3 to censure and remove Vice President Susan Greer from her officer role. We also report on the Village of Elsie’s ongoing negotiations with the Fire Authority and a reduced $40 million bond proposal coming before St. Johns voters in November.
On a lighter note, there’s plenty happening around our communities this month. The DeVries Nature Conservancy invites everyone to its annual Fall Festival on October 17, complete with wagon rides, a petting zoo, and pumpkin painting. The Laingsburg American Legion Auxiliary is gearing up for its annual Craft Show on November 7, and the Ovid Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting on October 6. Our sports pages celebrate the Wolfpack soccer team’s Senior Night victory, a gritty Marauder football comeback over Durand, and a strong showing by both cross-country programs at the Saranac CMAC Jamboree. Plus, our Gridiron Guru contest continues with Week 7 picks—congratulations to Alex Arnst on his first win! As always, thank you for reading and supporting local journalism.
