Memorial Day Services in Elsie and Ovid

by Dawn D Levey

ELSIE – Mary Levey started, “Today is Memorial Day, a day that we take time to honor the brave men and women who unlike me, did not retune home. Today is not Veterans Day, it is not a day to celebrate, it is a day to reflect on the true cost of freedom and remember those who laid down their lives in service to our country.

Additional highlights included the “Gettysburg Address”, memorized and performed by Alexis Cooper; a musical performance by the Ovid-Elsie Band and the hosting of the remembrance by the Elsie American Legion and assisted by Ovid veterans.

OVID- On a warm and sunny May 30th in downtown Ovid, a large crowd gathered in front of the Ovid Lions/VFW Hall for their Memorial Day Service. Mayor, Bill Lasher welcomed those in attendance. Retired Air Force Veteran, Joe Rodriquez was the keynote speaker. Music was provided by the OE High School Band and a luncheon was hosted by the Ovid Lions Club and Ovid Carriage Days Committee inside the hall following the service. A newly purchased bench by the Lions Club was on display. It will be stationed at Veterans Memorial Park (OE Youth Football Site) as part of a Lions future project.
